For Heartlands Community Forest Board
JON SCHUBBE
Natural resource experience.
A scientific perspective.
My priority is the health and integrity of the Heartlands forest ecosystem, and its benefits for the residents of Keweenaw County.
01 / Priorities
A HEALTHY
HEARTLANDS FOREST.
A healthy forest provides lasting benefits for the residents of Keweenaw County.
A healthy, functioning forest provides ecosystem services: clean water and air, diverse outdoor recreation, berries and other wild foods, and healthy wildlife for observation and sustainable harvest. It can also support sustainable local forestry.
Management should focus on ecosystem integrity and recovery toward mature secondary growth. Where logging is appropriate, I favor small local outfits to keep as much of the economic benefit in Keweenaw County as possible.
I’ll use my science background and experience in natural resource management and recreation planning to set realistic goals that improve forest health and benefit the residents of Keweenaw County.
02 / Background & Experience
27 YEARS IN
NATURAL RESOURCES.
I have over 27 years of experience in natural resources, beginning at a state park near my childhood home.
During my time in Keweenaw County, I’ve lived and worked in outdoor recreation, working closely with Rock Solid Trail Contracting to plan and design East Bluff Bike Park and with Copper Harbor Trails Club to plan, design, and permit the Keweenaw Point Trail, including sensitive species review.
I am also co-owner of East Bluff Bike Park, Campground, and Bike Shuttle.
